Cataclysm Zone Review: Southern Barrens (Horde)

I recently decided to take a break from my frantic addon coding to make a video of the questing in the Southern Barrens. If people like this, I'll be making one or two more before Cata comes out, if I have time. I do plan to make more video guides of other types in the future, such as boss guides, and who knows what else!

This is a video review of the zone the Southern Barrens, Horde side. The videos will take you through the entire questing experience of the Southern Barrens, during which I discuss the general quality of the quests and touch on several of the most interesting stories that take place in this zone.

If you enjoyed the videos, help wow-pro gain publicity by rating them and subscribing to my YouTube channel!

Addon Update and Guide Recorder!

The addon has been updated to v1.6.1! You can download it here, or from the addon site of your choice. Changes this time through include:

New Features
  • Several guide files have been updated
  • Tooltip added to the minimap
  • Sound added when you complete a step (optional, customizable)
Bug Fixes:
  • General cleanup of quest loop up process
  • Fix issue

Also: The WoW-Pro Guide Recorder has arrived! You can download it here or from your addon website of choice. It's still a bit buggy and the scroll feature doesn't seem to be fully functional with it yet, but it definitely works!

ANYONE IN THE BETA - it would be a HUGE help if you wanted to run the recorder while you play, pretty much in any zone. If it's a zone which already has a "paper" guide, it would be best if you followed the guide - but even if it doesn't have one or you don't follow it, it's still a really big help to get those guide files started.

When you are ready to quit or reload your UI, make sure you hit the save icon. This will pop up a window with an edit box. Select all, copy, and post the result here on the website. It will then also save the guide in your WTF folder, so you can open it up and work on it again. If copy/pasting the stuff from the edit box doesn't work for you, you can also send the WTF file in.

Thanks in advance, it would be awesome to have an army of WoW-Pro folks recording guides for pretty much every zone in the beta. Looking forward to it!

Coming Soon: I'll be working on a major site organizational update, along with WoW-Pro user Skumball. We're focusing on moving old or outdated guides into work-in-progress mode and getting guides up to date and in places where they will be easy to find. Additionally, I'll be improving addon documentation, the how to contribute page, and the needed guides page.

Look forward to it!

Addon Update - v1.4.0

It's that time again! I just uploaded another update to the WoW-Pro leveling addon. Click here to download it!

This update is mostly bug fixes, with one nice new feature added by Silvann - coordinate based completion! This means we can have a run step which directs the user to an exact location, rather than just a general area. Thanks for the awesome contribution, Silvann!

Full version notes incoming...

New Features
  • Coordinate based completion. GUIDE CODERS: Use |CC| to enable coordinate completion, and |CS| for a specific coordinate sequence, both with R type steps.
  • Several guide files have been updated
Bug Fixes:
  • Minor bugs with mapping coordinates fixed
  • Error causing Hellfire Peninsula guide to be unplayable has been fixed
  • Issues in several guides caused by a lack of a QID have been fixed
  • Faction neutral guides should now correctly show up in the guide list
  • Accept steps with |PRE| tags will no longer be incorrectly skipped

Tour Guide Recorder

Pretzl recently discovered that Tekkub is still updating his Tour Guide Recorder over on WoW Interface. The Tour Guide Recorder can be used to create guide files for our addon as well, though some editing will be needed to change the coordinate style from TourGuide's version to our own. Obviously these guides will be very bare bones, with no notes and none of the awesome features we've added (such as sticky steps, ranking, and step skipping). But it can be a great way to start, especially when writing guides from scratch. Until I can put together our own in game recorder and editor, this is a great option. Thanks Pretzl, for finding this!

The World of Jiya

An update on what's going on with me - I've been even busier than expected. I'm still unpacking in my new home, and school starts at 8am tomorrow morning (ewww). Still, I expect that things will shortly settle down and I will be back to my old active self.

ADDON UPDATE - v1.3.0

The WoW-Pro addon has been updated! You can download it here.

Target Button

One of the coolest new features in the addon is the addition of a target button. If the guide author includes the new |T| target tag and the name of a mob or NPC, a button will appear next to the step. If you click the button, the game will attempt to target the mob, and if found, will place a skull above their head. This will be great for hard to find quest mobs, especially those who can spawn in one of several places.

Scrolling

Scrolling is now possible in the main guide window! This is awesome for guide authors in particular, since it allows you to see all steps in a guide much more easily. Our typical user will probably never use this feature (indeed I would recommend you not to!) but for authors who need to move around in the guide and see completed steps, it's great!

Step Ranking

This is probably going to be one of the most important features in the addon, but it will need to be coded into guides before it will do anything. The idea is that you now have a sliding scale from 1-5 where you can choose the level of "completeness" you want - 5 being the most complete, 1 being the least. People with tons of heirlooms, recruit a friend bonus, rested XP, or who like to run dungeons can choose a lower rating, since they tend to level faster. People who don't have any bonuses or who are going for questing achievements can choose 5. Guide authors will rank steps based on how important they are and how easy they are to do. Quests with great rewards (XP and/or gear), which aren't too difficult, and which aren't out of the way, will be ranked 1 (most important). Quests which aren't too far out of the way but which only have mediocre awards will be ranked around 3. Quests with little reward and which take you out of your way will be ranked 5 (least important). Any inranked steps will be considered a 1.

As you can see, this will revolutionize our guide and make it much more useful to a wider variety of people. Unfortunately, we won't really be able to see the full awesomeness of this feature until it is implemented throughout a guide. Our goal is to have all of these features fully implemented in our Cataclysm guides, so you should be able to see all of them in action when the expansion is released.

Change Log

Here is a full list of the changes in this version.

New Features
  • Several new tags added to help make our guides even more clear! See the "guide writers" section below for details
  • Scrolling in the normal guide frame! You can now enable scrolling in the display options, which will also display ALL quests, including optional and skipped ones.
  • Target button - if the guide coder provides the name of a target mob or NPC, the guide will now show a target button next to the step which will target that mob or NPC if they are in range and place a skull above their head, so you can easily locate patrolling or otherwise hard to find mobs.
  • New step ranking system ranks the importance of steps! This allows you to choose how complete you would like your experience of a zone to be. If you just want to level and get out of there, and if you have heirloom gear or recruit a friend bonuses or run instances, you can set the addon to a lower level of completeness to skip unnecessary quests. NOTE: While this has been implemented in the addon, it has not yet been added to guides. This will happen gradually, but should be implemented in Cataclysm guides by the expansion's release.
Guide Writers
Several new tags and steps have been implemented:
  • LVL - use this tag to denote a step that completes once the user reaches that level. There is also a new step type, L, to denote a step that completes once the user levels up.
  • LEAD - use for lead in or breadcrumb type quests, followed by the QID for the quest it leads to. This step will be checked off if the user has already completed the quest it leads up to.
  • T - target tag. Follow by the name of the mob or NPC you want the user to be able to target.
  • r - Repair/restock step. Behaves exactly like a N step in that it must be checked off, but has a nice repair/restock icon.
  • P - profession tag. Follow by the name of the profession, and optionally the level of the profession required for the step. The step will only be displayed if the character has that professions at that level.
  • RANK - this tag should be used as much as possible from now on, and denotes how important a quest is. 1 is the most important and will NEVER be skipped. 5 is the least important. Vital quest chains with great XP and item rewards should be marked 1. Things that are neutral in rewards but which are convenient to do should be around a 3. Things that take you out of your way and aren't particularly rewarding should be marked a 5. Anything unmarked will be considered a 1. In general, a character with heirlooms and RAF should be able to get through the guide on a setting of 1, while a character with none of these bonuses and who doesn't do instances or have rested would need a setting of 5.
Bug Fixes:
  • Conflict with BlizzBugsSuck resolved
  • The |NC| noncombat tag will now only apply to C complete steps.
  • Several bugs due to lack of a check to make sure the QID was provided
  • Addon should now correctly count skipped quests toward guide completion in the progress count
  • General restructuring and streamlining of quest skipping and display functions should improve performance and reduce bugs
Moving Time

I will be moving this weekend, so this is it for me until next week. I hope everyone enjoys the update, and I'll be back battling bugs and working on Cataclysm guides after the weekend!

Secret New Project

I've started work on a new project, inspired by Pretzl of WoW-Pro. I'll be working on it in my off time when I need a break from addon work. It's pretty small, but a fun little guide that I hope people will find amusing and useful, or at least an interesting peak into the beta for those who don't have access.

I won't tell you all exactly what it is yet, though! It will be a surprise!

Beta Buzz

I've been exploring the beta, and I have to say I can amuse myself for hours just flying around looking at the changed scenery. It's gorgeous. I've also peeked into some of the low level dungeons, and I definitely like the changes I see. Beautiful dungeon maps, quest givers at the beginning of the instance - oh to level at such a time!

My biggest disappointment this week was learning that the year's work I put into What a Long Strange Trip It's Been is essentially worthless. The Violet Proto-Drake has been downgraded to a 280% mount, and you have to buy the next level of flying just like everyone else if you want to fly at 310% speed. I think this was a bad call on Blizzard's part, basically taking away a fun toy that people worked hard to earn. I understand not applying that 310% to all our other mounts, but they should have let us keep the fast speed on the ugly purple drake, at least. Oh well.

The World of Jiya

I will be moving this Saturday, and plan to get a new version of the addon up before then. I'm also working hard on the guide recorder, but it's slow going. Hats off to Shakazahn, who found an abandoned project similar to ours which uses a guide recorder - we'll be reverse engineering it to get ideas on how to implement ours.

Future Plans

Once the craze of getting leveling guides ready to go dies down, I'd really like to purchase FRAPS and get some video editing software so I can make some video guides. I'd like to think I'd do a decent job of it. Subjects I could cover include boss fights, achievements, class advice, and who knows what else!

That's all I have for today, just wanted to give you folks an update on the goings-on for WoW-Pro and myself.

ADDON UPDATE - v1.2.0

Hi everyone!

I just released the next update for the WoW-Pro addon! You can download it here.

Step Skipping

My favorite feature in this update is the step skipping logic. It's really going to make this addon amazing once it's incorporated into the guide files. Basically, when you skip a step, it's added to your skipped step list. Any step that's dependent on that QID will also be skipped, including complete and turn in steps. Also, any step that lists your skipped step in the |PRE| (prerequisites) tag will ALSO be added to the skip list, and skipped.

It works backwards too - if you un-skip that early quest, it will un-skip your later quests too.

Unfortunately we'll need the guide editing community to do a lot of updating to get this feature to be the best it can be, but I think ultimately it will take our guides one level above where they are now. Eventually you'll also be able to mouse over a step and see all of it's prerequisites. Pretty awesome!

For users - the default (left click) behavior of check boxes is to skip steps. Since that's what people were mostly using the manual check off for anyway, you shouldn't notice any change. If you want to manually complete a step (as opposed to skipping it), just right click instead.

Resetting the guide resets any steps that were skipped in that guide.

Smooth Resize

I want to give a shout out and thanks to silvann over on WoW-Pro.com, who solved our strange resize issue. The guide can now be manually resized smoothly and beautifully. Silvann is also working on a method for auto-completing steps when a coordinate has been reached, as well as the dungeon module for the addon. Thanks silvann, you rock!

Change Log

Here's the full list of changes and fixes in this version of the guide

New Features:
  • Coordinates now pull from Lightheaded if it’s installed and the coordinates aren’t provided in the guide (for interim use ONLY – all coordinates will be provided in the future)
  • Manual resizing is now smooth and pretty. Thanks a ton, Silvann!
  • When a step is completed in combat, it is checked off so that it’s clear it is completed. Update will happen when exiting combat.
  • When a quest objective is completed, a © is placed next to it in the quest tracking text.
  • Logic is now in place for step skipping and dependencies! Guide coders: Please use |PRE| followed by the prerequisite’s quest ID for any and all quests with prerequisites! Users: you can left click a step’s checkbox to skip it – right clicking marks it complete manually.
  • New tag for C (complete) type steps – add |NC| on the end for non-combat quests, this turns the icon from the crossed swords into a gear to represent the lack of combat in the step.
  • Multiple quest objectives can be added to a single step using the |QO| tag, just use a ; semicolon in between them.
  • Many guides have been updated. You may want to reset the guide you are on to avoid version conflicts.
Bug Fixes:
  • Guide window will no longer move off the screen when minimized.
  • Night Elf starter guide will no longer cause weird issues on initial load up
  • Errors should no longer be thrown when dealing with partial quest completion steps.
Future Posts

I will be gone for most of this week - I'm preparing for a big move, and will be meeting my new house mates and going through my stuff that's in storage, so I'll be unable to play, post, or respond to comments until sometime next weekend.

However, once that's done, I am going to be posting here more often with updates, musings, and cataclysm sneak peaks. Look forward to it!

I'm very pleased to announce the official release of the WoW-Pro addon!

It's still may have a few hidden bugs, but it's been working great and we have over 1000 downloads combined from WoW Interface and Curse, not to mention those who have gotten it directly from WoW-Pro.

It's the hope of Jame and I that hosting this addon on the major addon websites will bring more people to WoW-Pro.We're going to be continuing to improve the addon from here on out, as well, so keep checking back in!

In other news, Jame and I may have gotten some beta keys. Lets hope it works out, we'll be in the beta soon writing some awesome guides for you all to enjoy!

Addon Alpha - Version 0.12.1 - BETA CANDIDATE

Another round of bug fixes later, and it's that time again folks!

http://wiki.github.com/Jiyambi/WoW-Pro-Guides/

This time through, we had mostly bug fixes. The only new feature added is support for multiple profiles for your display settings, courtesy of Ace3

Our addon alpha files have moved to github. Everything is still available in zip format for the many folks who aren't familiar with git, but we now to have a git repository available for the programmers out there!

Feel free to make an account over on github (it's free) and leave feedback there via the awesome issue tracker. However, I'll still respond to any feedback sent via WoW-Pro, email, blog, or twitter, just as I have been Smiling

Thanks for the hard work everyone, we are almost there!

WoW-Pro Addon Version 0.12 - BETA Candidate

Alright folks, this could be it. I've uploaded the most recent version of the addon, and I've crossed every bug and needed feature off my list. So if this goes well in testing, I'll release it on the main WoW-Pro site next week.

Bug Fixes:
  •  Double-clicking the titlebar to hide the guide no long makes the guide display an empty window on reopen when resize is enabled
  • Tooltips no longer appear off the screen if the guide is placed on the left side of the screen. NOTE: Itembuttons will always appear on the left side. It was producing a lot of lag to try and move them, and I think they still look better over there even with the guide is on that side of the screen.
  • The guide no longer jumps in position when being hidden or when automatically resizing itself when using the manual step number setting.
  • The lag due to changing the guide's size or the row spacing or size is now gone.
  • Quest tracking now works when you first load up your character - it was not working until guide update or reload in the past.
New Features:
  • Cooldown on Item Buttons
  • Confirmation Message - when the addon tries to load the next guide after you've completed one. You have the option to choose a guide from the menu instead.
  • Optional |O| and Prerequisite |PRE| tags - Full functionality added. |O| tags must be accompanied by a |PRE| tag or a |L| tag to work. The |O| step will display only if the |PRE| quest is complete, or if the required |L| items are in the player's inventory
  • Minimap Button can be hidden
  • Version Number - now displayed in the config panel
Still To Come:
  • |LVL| tag, displayed if you are below that level
  • |T| tag, targets specified mob and marks it
  • |LEAD| tag, for optional lead-in quests that don't show up if you've already completed their follow-up
  • Z step type. Because Horde have zeppelins not boats dammit!
  • Quest dependencies
  • Quest skipping
  • Right click step to share quests
  • Numbered ranking for steps, and a difficulty slider that allows users to skip unimportant / lower XP quests. Intended for RaF, heirlooms, or heavy instancers. (conversely also good for completists, who can use the lowest setting).
Test away, and let me know if you notice any issues!

WoW-Pro Addon Version 0.11

This is just a quick patch which fixes some bugs and adds a couple features.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I included the guides which were modified by Shakazam as well as the most up to date guides that others have uploaded here. So if you are working on a guide right now, PLEASE make a back up of it and be careful that your working version doesn't get overwritten when you download this new update!

Bug Fixes:
  • New Character Load: Fixed the issue that was causing multiple errors on load for any new characters other than orcs, trolls, or draenei. Sorry, I thought I fixed this long ago but apparently I didn't!
  • Nil Guide Infinite Loop: Nil guide was set to load itself upon completion, causing an infinite loop. I fixed this and also coded for the case where a "next guide" was not listed, so the user should not see any errors due to this anymore.
New features:
  • Enable/Disable: The addon as a whole and also individual modules can now be enabled or disabled from their config panels. Disabling hides the frames and unregisters events, but leaves the config panels and minimap button in place.
  • Load Default Settings: The main config panel now has an option to reload the default settings.

  • Panda: Thanks to Gylin, who located the in game icon, we now have an actual panda icon which matches WoW-Pro's logo. Yay!
More features are hopefully on the way tomorrow, but I wanted to get this quick patch out to help with those nasty bugs!

WoW-Pro Addon Version 0.10

A new version of the addon is available for download, and boy is it a big one! This newest version is packed FULL of new features.

Bug Fixes:
  • Item buttons work! The code cleanup to prepare for the customization features magically fixed our weird issue with the item button. Yay! We still need to add the cooldown but it's looking good!
  • Code cleanup - anyone working on the code please take note that I've cleaned up a LOT involving the code frames. They have changed significantly so please check them if you are working on something. In particular, I've completely revamped the way sticky frames are handled. Ask me if you need help with this. NOTE: This is all internal code, people writing guide files shouldn't notice anything!
New features:
  • Customization! You can now customize:
    • Background texture and color, both for the main guide window and for sticky steps. Can use alpha to make frame transparent.
    • Border type, and whether it's present at all.
    • Titlebar color, and whether it's present at all.
    • Text - size, color, and font.
    • Notes - hover over or always displayed
    • Enable/disable drag and resize
    • Padding and spacing
    • Manually set the number of steps displayed - guide window will resize to the number specified if this option is enabled.
  • Menu buttons - I added new buttons to the right-click dropdown menu! You can reset the current guide and open up the new display customization from here
  • Quest Tracker - optional. Tracks quest just like the normal quest tracker. Shows under all "complete" steps, or "note"/"kill" steps that complete based on partial quest objectives. Not yet thoroughly tested so please provide feedback!
  • Click to open quest - Just click a step to open it's corresponding quest if the quest is in your log!
  • Progress - displayed on Title Bar. In the future may add an option to display a percentage instead of a straight # / #. Did some corrections to how these numbers are calculated so they will be more accurate.
  • Guide Load On Complete - When an old guide is completed, a new one loads! There isn't a confirmation message for this yet, but it will be added.
  • Minimap Button / LDB Object - For now this only opens and closes the addon's frame on left click and opens options on right click. It might have more functionality in the future.
Known Issues / Needed Additions:
  • Enable/Disable of the addon as a whole or the leveling module aren't set up yet, so don't be alarmed!
  • Frame is generally set up to be situated on the right side of the screen only (in terms of where tooltips appear). No this is not how it will always be, but that's how it is for the time being.
  • When using manual step number, when the guide resizes itself, it anchors to it's center so it's resize acts a little weird. I need to investigate how to go about fixing this - help greatly appreciated. Note that this also happens when the guide is resized to hide it when double clicking the title bar.
  • On guide update and any time the height of the rows is changed, there is a decent amount of lag. I don't like this but I'm not sure if we'll be able to easily change it. The source of the lag is definitely the WoWPro.RowSizeSet() function, which seems kind of strange because it only has 15 repetitions and other functions have much more and don't cause the lag issue. Go go gadget programmers, figure it out! :)
  • There is still no cooldown on the item buttons, I've been meaning to add it back in but haven't got around to it yet.
  • When auto-loading the next guide, there needs to be a confirmation message.
  • Need an option to reload the default display settings.
  • On initial guide load, quest tracking doesn't seem to work. As soon as the addon is updated, however, it works as intended. Can't figure out why this is >_<
Once all the known issues are fixed and the needed additions are added, this version should be ready for beta release. It's still kind of a long list, but I'm confident we'll be able to get them done fairly quickly.

Programmers: I need help most with finding out whats going on with the resize (actually it's a :SetHeight() function) and why there is so much lag when we call WoWPro.RowSizeSet(). Anyone who can shed some light on one of those two issues wins tons of karma, both the intangible kind and the kind that means points and privileges on WoW-Pro!

Real ID on Forums Withdrawn!

I just wanted to update anyone reading this with the situation: Blizzard announced today that they are withdrawing the RealID forum integration - http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=25968987278&sid=1&pageNo=1

I am relieved beyond words. I felt such an overwhelming sense of betrayal through all this. I was terrified that I would have to look for a new MMO and lose some or all of the wonderful relationships I've built with my friends and guild mates over the years. I tried to play once or twice during the last few days but I couldn't stay online for more than a few minutes. I was distracted and upset throughout. Finally I feel like I can breathe again.

I am proud of Blizzard for listening to their community, but I still feel a twinge of doubt and distrust now when I think about them. I hope in time my belief in them can be restored - I have always felt in the past that Blizzard was above other gaming companies, that they had a better idea of what their gamers wanted. I sincerely hope that becomes true again in the future.

The RealID Scandal

I decided it was high time I post an opinion piece on the RealID situation currently rocking the MMO world. Keep in mind everything here is my opinion. I enjoy debates as long as they are civil so feel free to comment and disagree with me (or agree, of course!).

The Overview

Some are calling this the biggest PR disaster to hit the MMO industry. The amount of public outcry on this subject is unprecedented. The forum post discussing the issue has over 34,000 posts - that's over 1,800 pages of people, for the most part, decrying the new feature.

For those who have been hiding under a rock the last few weeks, here is a FAQ about RealID provided by Blizzard: http://us.battle.net/realid/faq.html - note that this FAQ does not yet seem to cover the forum change. Additionally WoW.com has continuing coverage of the issue and Blizzard's responses to it: http://www.wow.com/2010/07/06/official-forum-changes-real-life-names-to-be-displayed/ and http://www.wow.com/2010/07/06/blizzards-responses-on-the-real-id-situation/

If you don't want to read the articles, here is a brief overview of what's been happening:

Initial In-Game Implementation

First, Blizzard implemented a new stage of their Battle.net integration (this effects both WoW and Starcraft). In this new feature, you can add a friend as a "RealID" friend. This means the person can see your first and last name. Blizzard cautioned us that this feature is intended for people who know themselves in real life, but that it is ultimately up to the users how they use it.

This original implementation created a minor stink because your friends' friends (who are not necessarily people you know) are able to see your real name. They are not informed of what character belongs to that name, but the inability to block this feature resulted in many players not using the RealID system. But, at this point the system was completely optional and had very little effect on gameplay.

Addon Security Vulnerability

However, after the system had been around for a few weeks, it was soon discovered that addons were able to exploit a security vulnerability in the system and display your real name to anyone and everyone (Reference: http://www.wow.com/2010/07/06/security-flaw-allows-addons-to-expose-full-real-life-names-witho/).

The Big One - Forums Use RealID

Shortly after that fiasco, Blizzard dropped what some are calling the biggest PR disaster ever to hit the MMO world - The WoW official forums will, in the future, display your RealID name. There is no way to opt out of this service: if you want to post in the forums, your real first and last name will be shown.

Let me do my best to make this abundantly clear. By "Official Forums" Blizzard includes not the normal QQ my class is broken lol Blizz noob posts. It includes (but is not limited to):
  • Suggestion Forums, where players have an outlet to suggest ideas for the game
  • Guild Recruitment Forums, without which a guild would be at a significant disadvantage in recruitment
  • Tech Support Forums, where users can report problems and request technical help.
Relevance - Can They Find You?

Before I discuss the consequences of this change, I want to put to rest some arguments about whether this all even matters. The first is the belief that no one will be able to find you just given your name. I'd like to share a story with you folks that puts that belief resoundingly in it's place - as a naive fantasy.

First of all, you can hear the story from those involved here: http://seewhatyoudidthere.com/2010/07/07/realid-changes-the-very-real-ease-of-stalking-in-the-internet-age/

In the huge forum thread I sited at the beginning of the article, one user decided he would support his argument that no one can find someone based only on their name by actually posting his name. Within 20 minutes the blogger in the above article found him and called him at work. He talked to the exposed user and confirmed that he knew not only his home address and home phone, but also:
  • What the user did for the 4th of July
  • The color of his bedroom walls
  • The name of his dog
  • The names of his parents
Luckily for the user, the blogger is a nice guy. He helped the user regain some privacy by improving his settings on various websites, and the user of course immediately removed his name from the forum post.

You may believe that most of this information must be from Twitter or Facebook. But you can just as easily find phone numbers and addresses from public phone books and census data. Think also about employer websites which may list your work information. And keep in mind that this user did not have a particularly unique name in any way. Just because your name is common, do not believe you are somehow protected.

Relevance - Safety

The above story is a cautionary tale but has a relatively happy ending. However, that's not always the case. In the following article, we see the other side of that coin: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101031-Counter-Strike-Knife-Fight-Leads-to-Real-Life-Stabbing

In this story, a user upset over losing a knife fight in Counter-Strike planned and plotted for seven months. He then drove to the knife fight winner's house, rang the doorbell, and stabbed the winner in the chest with a real, honest to goodness knife. The second gamer was extremely lucky - the knife barely missed his heart and he survived.

This occurred in a game where death is a momentary inconvenience. In WoW, our characters represent hundreds of hours of invested time. Ninja'd loot, for one example, is a far more serious event than killing someone in Counter-Strike. Would you like to make it one step easier for angry psychopaths to find you via your guild recruitment post using your real name? I know I would not.

Relevance - Reputation

Safety isn't the only reason that a user might wish to remain anonymous. Though it may seem foreign to many of us, some people could be harmed via WoW in a completely different manner - through their reputation. Sadly, not all successful businesses, law firms, hospitals, universities, or other "prestigious" organizations view gaming with a tolerant eye. Being a gamer openly can hurt your chances of receiving a job and can make it harder for you to be taken seriously in your chosen field. I'm not going to go into this too much, but even if this doesn't effect you please consider the people that it does effect.

The Issues - Tech Support is Optional?

Now that we've determined that revealing first and last names is indeed a relevant concern, lets talk about what that means in this situation.

The most glaring and obvious issue, to me, is the tech support forums. If a user wants to report a tech support problem, he or she has no choice but to reveal their first and last name for anyone and everyone on the internet to see. Now, you might say, you can just call Blizzard or leave an in game ticket if you want to contact them. I beg to differ. I have had three friends hacked in the last month and another two had their accounts locked out (it turns out completely unjustly). In order to talk to someone on the phone they had to wait at least 45 minutes, often much longer. In game ticket queues can take days. And even when one of those methods result in an actual conversation with a Blizzard employee, things are seldom immediately resolved (a good friend still has not received his hundreds of emblems of triumph lost to the hacker). In this situation it's important that every tech support avenue be used and fully open to users.

I maintain, therefore, that it is completely unacceptable to require this blatant disregard for user privacy if a user wishes to post in the tech support forums.

The Issues - The Morality of Intimidating the Trolls

One of Blizzard's officially stated motives is that they hope to use this new feature to reduce trolling on the forums. Now, I don't like forum trolls and I would love to see less of them around. But I think the real logic behind this "encouragement" for us to act more appropriately needs to be examined.

Clearly, the way they hope to accomplish this is that, with the knowledge that their real name will be posted with their comments, users will think twice about making rude posts. But what will cause them to think twice? Will they reflect whether or not this will be a suitable way to treat other human beings? Not likely. The fact is Blizzard is hoping that user will be motivated by fear: Fear that any negativity generated by the post will cross over to the "real world" to haunt them. If all they were going for is accountability, a simple unchangeable gamer handle would suffice - the fact that it must be your real name means they want this to cross over to your life outside WoW. As I've shown in the two examples above, this is not an unreasonable fear. The fact that Blizzard is utilizing this fear to accomplish it's goals, however noble those goals may be, is disturbing.

And the sad thing is, this is very unlikely to actually stop trolling. People who troll will still find ways to troll, whether they do so with disregard to their in game or real life reputation, or whether they use false names, trial accounts, or other ways. In addition, the possibility of character assassination (there is nothing to stop you from purposely listing the name of an enemy as your account name) has been introduced as well.

I maintain that Blizzard's use of fear to attempt to intimidate users into good behavior is both ineffective and reprehensible.

The Issues - Discrimination

Possibly the most important (and most easily overlooked) issue present in this brouhaha is the unequal effect the change will have on minorities, particularly women and gay gamers. It is pretty unarguable that a very significant portion of WoW's player base is extremely homo-phobic. Women gamers, while becoming more and more common, are still often treated with disrespect or with inappropriate stalker-like behavior. It will be pretty easy to determine whether a user is male or female based on name alone. Additionally, users with names from other nationalities could also be threatened. We can agree, then, that revealing the first and last names to these threatened groups would be highly undesirable and could cause emotional distress, stalking, or even violence.

Many people are simply saying, as a response to those uncomfortable with this feature, "Just don't post!". Even without the tech support issues discussed above, we need to examine how this threat, both emotional and physical, is unequally effecting the player base. Consider, for example, a cis ("normal" sexuality), white male when compared with a female, a male with "alternative" sexuality, or another minority group. Do you honestly believe this new "feature" will be affecting them equally? Is it fair to say to the more threatened, less comfortable group, "just don't use this feature"? Is it fair to deny them this privilege?

Here is an artical from another woman gamer discussing this issue: http://www.spiderfarmer.com/2010/07/07/blizzards-burqa/

I maintain that by revealing real names for all forum posts, Blizzard is driving away minority groups and allowing those in the majority more access to privileges, in this case the forums.

How can I help?

If you are as angry as I am about this, send complaints to Blizzard's privacy email: privacy@blizzard.com

And to the ESRB: privacy@esrb.org

The more outraged voices they hear, the more likely they are to make a change!

Closing

I'd like to include a few succinct comments from WoW.com's threads to close. One user said:

They told us it was by invite only, then they displayed our friends of friends.
They told us it was secure, but addons have already found vulnerabilities in their security.
They told us it was optional, but now if we want to post on the official forums, it's required.

Finally, another user summed up the whole mess: "RealID: So optional, it's mandatory!"

I'm very happy to discuss any of the points in the article with you. However, please be civil in any comments you make, or they will be deleted.

WoW-Pro Addon Version 0.9

A new version is available for download! Yes I know I skipped version 0.8, I forgot something in the first upload >_<

Most importantly in this update, I've added the last few pieces of code for auto-completion. All steps should now auto-complete correctly! Additionally, I've added the preliminary code for item buttons. Unfortunately, they don't yet work with sticky steps, and there isn't a visible cool-down displayed on them. If anyone is knowledgeable in programming and wants to help out with this feature, it would be greatly appreciated.

Bug Fixes:
  • The guide no longer anchors to the mini map. This should avoid issues people were having with Carbonite as well as addons which move the minimap.
  • Thanks to Peter for adding code to keep the guides from other factions unlisted :)

New Features:
  • Auto-completion for set hearth steps
  • Auto-completion based on the |L| tag, support for buy steps
  • Auto-completion based on the |QO| tag (partial quest completion)
  • Partial implementation of the item button (see below)
In other news, we've started rewarding Karma points over at WoW-Pro again. I added a section on the linked page explaining points for addon work as well.

With some luck, we'll have a beta version of the addon available on the main WoW-Pro site in a week or two!

WoW-Pro Addon Version 0.6

The newest build for the WoW-Pro addon is up on the addon's website (http://sites.google.com/site/wowproaddon), and it's packed full of new features! None are quite as impressive as the sticky feature added in the last version of the build, but these are nice all the same:

Bug Fixes:
  • The guide list now has a scrollbar. Sorry about overlooking that!
  • The race (and class) tags will now work if there is more than one race listed - thanks very much Peter!
New Features:
  • Zone tags, for coordinates outside of the guide's current zone, are now operational! Just like in the old Tour Guide version, simply use |Z|Zone Name| to make the coordinates map correctly.
  • Multiple coordinates per step are now functional, just as they used to work with Tour Guide! Simply separate the coordinates with a semi-colon as in this example: |M|36.2,4.38;19.0,52.3|
  • Auto-completion is now enabled for run, fly, boat, and hearth steps.
  • Auto-completion is now enabled for get flightpath steps.
Not bad for a single update!

I'm off work this coming week so I should be putting a lot of hours into the addon. Look for some awesome new stuff next time around. I'm planning to get all of the auto-completion functionality that is in Tour Guide added to our addon by this weekend, and then sink my teeth into the item button feature.

Look forward to it!

WoW-Pro Addon Version 0.5

I just uploaded a new version of the WoW-Pro Addon alpha build over on it's website, https://sites.google.com/site/wowproaddon.

New Feature Completed: Sticky Steps

New in this version is the |US| unsticky tag, which completes the "sticky steps" feature. Sticky steps are created using the |S| sticky tag, which causes the step to float at the top of the guide window. These steps indicate things the user should do as they go, while completing the other steps in the guide.

The |US| tag causes the step to be removed from the sticky part of the frame and come back down to the main frame, indicating that the user now needs to complete that step. All that is required is for the two steps to have the same name. The |N| can be completely different, and often should be during the |US| step to inform the user that it's their last chance to complete that step.

There are still quite a few missing features and bugs in the addon, but it's coming along nicely all the same and the support from the WoW-Pro community has been phenomenal.

Remember, if you want to get real time updates of what I'm working on in the addon, follow me on Twitter!

I'll be very busy the next week moving and visiting family, so expect the next update the weekend after next!

Updated: WoW-Pro Improvements

Wow has it been a while since I've posted here! I'm still active on my Twitter account and over at WoW-Pro. I've been working hard on an addon to bring WoW-Pro guides into the game, you can check it out over at: https://sites.google.com/site/wowproaddon

Jame has asked me to update my old list of possible improvements for WoW-Pro.com, so here is what I've got:
  • Comment Rating - It's been mentioned and I still am looking forward to it. A simple thumbs up or down would be all that's needed for this. Add to this graying out or minimizing badly ranked comments and automatic comment purging.
  • Improved Categorization - Some of the organization of guides can be improved. There are some issues that Jame has mentioned - atm, guides can't be in two categories at once, so things like class-specific leveling guides make for confusion.
  • Featured Guide - it would be cool to have a special "Featured Guide" that changes periodically, that could be based on the guide's ratings. This could appear on the main page or on a sidebar.
  • Automation of the Karma System - As a moderator, I've got to say that keeping track of Karma for comments is just not going to happen. Karma for guides is possible, but what about Karma for addon work? Blog posts? And whatnot. Some automation in the Karma system is on the top of my wish list. Pretty much all the ranks below Moderator could be automated as well, but I would definitely recommend NOT automating the Moderator rank.
  • View Count - Check out how many unique users/IP views a guide has gotten. I always am curious if people actually ever read my guides.
  • General Guides - A silly pet peeve of mine, these guides are not general, they are quite specific - general would be something like "WoW tips" or whatever. Maybe change title to "More Guides" or something.
  • Comment Notification - a simple notification, similar to the PM one already in place, for when someone comments on your guide or responds to a comment of yours. I know this is already in place for watched guides, but having an option to turn it on automatically for comment strings you are participating in could be nice.
  • Karma for Ranking Guides - One point of Karma for ranking guides might be nice, though this might be a bit much too. Some reward to get people out there and rating the guides would be good.
  • Clear Policy for Guide "Purges" - By purge I mean simply putting a guide back to Work in Progress. Something like "If a guide has five votes and has a ranking of 2 or less it goes back to work in progress". We want everyone to contribute but we also want to be known for having high quality guides.
  • Blogs - I know a few users have, in the past, wanted to come out with mini-guides or weekly tips. Having some category or format more tailored to this type of "guide" might be nice, though the current system (putting them in their own category) works okay.
I'll add to this as I think of things.

Patch 3.3.3 Goodies!

MMO Champion put up their summary of the PTR 3.3.3 patch notes today, and there are a lot of interesting things in there.
  • [Frozen Orbs] may be less useless in the coming patch, as they will be used as currency, but to buy what, we don't know yet. There are some conjectures that things like [Frost Lotus] or even emblems may be purchasable in this manner. The bottom line is, HANG ON TO YOUR ORBS! I know some people have gotten in the habit of VENDORING these items because they sell so badly on the AH these days. Keep them, they may just be useful!
  • Cooldowns will be removed for crafting [Titansteel Bars], [Moonshroud], [Spellweave] and [Ebonweave]. These items will probably be dropping drastically in price, so try to sell the ones you've got now.
  • Some fun changes to battlegrounds on the way, including the random battleground feature. Marks will no longer be used to buy stuff, so use em up now! This is good news for me, since I will be farming my battleground mounts in the future!
  • Deserter debuff buffed! I really hate this change. This means that, if a tank bails in HHoR and the group doesn't want to find another, everyone but one of you is out of luck for not 15, but now THIRTY minutes!
  • Inability to need items clarified. I still call this bullshit, Blizz. If I'm on my tree and a cloth upgrade drops that no one else needs, I should be able to need it. I understand that the rules are in place to protect lower armor type wearers, but it seems ridiculous to force players to shard items that are huge upgrades. This system is clearly broken and needs to be fixed.
  • Improvements on the vote to kick system. I like this.
  • World event bosses added to dungeon finder! Yay!
  • Quest tracking improvements. They seem useful.
  • Various class changes, but none involving druids.
Overall I'm looking forward to 3.3.3. What about you folks?

New Toys

If you've been following me on Twitter, you already know of one of my new acquisitions from this weekend. I've added a second as well, and here are the pics for your enjoyment!

Spirit Coyote summoned from [Don Carlos' Famous Hat]

I love toys and collectibles, so this was awesome! I'm still going for several of the other rare mounts in the game, I'll post if I ever get one.

For those who don't know:

[Reins of the Raven Lord] is an extremely rare drop from Anzu, an optional boss who can only be summoned by a druid who has completed their epic flight form quest. The boss can be summoned in heroic Sethekk Halls. To access this instance, you must purchase the key, which requires honored with the Lower City. The instance can be solo'd by a bear tank in decent gear.

[Don Carlos' Famous Hat] is a 100% drop item from Don Carlos in heroic Old Hillsbrad Foothills. Though only one hat drops at a time, and it does save you to the instance, the hat can easily be farmed for everyone in your group by leaving the instance and reseting it. Don Carlos will reset. Note that HE WILL DESPAWN if you complete the instance events, so make sure you get your hats first if you plan to complete the instance. You must be honored with the Keepers of Time to purchase the key allowing access to heroic mode. Don Carlos was quite easy for me to solo as a tank in decent gear.

Paladin Power!

I just wanted to share the amazingly awesome event that happened to me and two friends last night. Two "real life" friends and I queued up for normal Forge of Souls. I was playing on Deedlet in her new healing spec, and my two friends were both recently 80 paladins, one a tank and the other ret.

The group we pugged into contained two other ret paladins. It was a group of all paladins! We completed the instance in good order and would have gone on for more if it wasn't so late. The whole time I was cracking up every time I glanced at Grid and saw all pink boxes.

In summary: Paladins rock.

Many Roles

Last time I talked about tanking with different classes. Today I'd like to talk about branching out in a different way: Trying out each possible talent tree for your characters.

On Honani, my main, I've filled every role a druid can fill. I've found that I dislike Boomkin, because I like to be up front and in the action when I DPS. I've healed extensively, and now I tank and kitty DPS as my main two specs. I feel like I have a very solid understanding of all that a druid can do, and I think it has greatly benefited my playstyle.

On Deedlet, my second level 80, I have both tanked and DPSd, and am now building a healing set. I want to try out that last talent tree just to see what it's like. Who knows, what if I really love healing as a paladin? And it seems a shame to have a level 80 character and not try out everything they have available.

On the other hand, during BC, I played a rogue named Jiyambi and never set foot outside of combat daggers spec. She's assassination now, but I've never ever seen the subtlety tree. If she ever gets to level 80, I hope to grab a duel spec and make a PvP spec just to try out that last tree.

Do you find it fun and interesting to try out many different options for your characters? Or do you pick one and stick with it? Have you ever been asked by your guild to change specs only to find that you really like your new one?

In other news, I am hoping to work on a new guide this weekend. We'll see if I manage to finish it!

Tanking: Druid vs Paladin

I've recently begun tanking on my paladin again, to take advantage of the daily frost badge random dungeon in hopes of purchasing some yummy [Primordial Saronite].

The first thing I noticed when switching to her is that her gear really, really sucks.

The second thing is that paladin tanking is a whole heck of a lot different from bear tanking.

Luckily I was with guild mates, so while it was still horribly embarrassing when mobs went running lose among the group, I at least didn't get yelled at and called a noob... well, they called me a noob, but I like to think it was lovingly.

I thought I understood paladin tanking pretty well. 9-6-9-6-9, right? I even had a fancy addon to help me fail less. And my original tanking experience was on my pally. But I've found that transferring from druid AoE tanking (which uses all of one button) to pally AoE tanking (in which you actually have to target different mobs and build threat on them) is a big jump. And pretty much every trash pull is an AoE pull these days.

The main tank in my guild has a level 80 tank of every tanking class, and plays each regularly. How he manages to switch seemlessly from one to another is beyond my comprehension. I will say that, as a main spec healer, playing tanks has brought me some very useful insight into the tools available to those I heal.

What about you folks? Do you play a tank? More than one? If so, do you find it challenging to switch between them?
